Finding Fanny

Life is all about expectations. I think the expectation from us starts even before we enter this world. And it continues even after we leave this world. I’m sure you understand what I mean. Expectation gives the expectant a sense of hope, something he or she can cling to. It’s a fascinating motivator, a mood booster, a great leveler, and what not.

So what has the title of this blog to do with expectation? I think a few of you, who have already watched this movie, can relate to what I call as falling short because of over-expectation. The kind of hype which was created for this movie, especially just before its release, led to an over-expectation in a movie buff like me. So when I watched it, although overall I liked it, however somewhere it left in me a feeling of wanting more. Interestingly, even if this movie is much better than many which have been released lately, it still has not been able to provide me an oomph factor.

Expectation up to a limit is a positive; however over-expectation calls for a whole lot of problems. My take is that over-expectation is the cause of maximum problems in this world. The over-expectation of parents from their child can be a cause of anxiety among the child, in some cases leading to personality disorder, and in some grave cases even suicide. The over-expectation of spouses from each other is keeping the legal counsels and the courts of different worlds quite busy! Many times, deterioration of health of young employees and their taking to poor habits like excessive smoking & drinking, could be a result of over-expectation of their bosses from them. Our prime minister is also presently going through the situation of over-expectation from the people of India from him. Most difficult cases are those of over-expectation of a person from oneself.

Creating expectation is good however long term sustainability can be very well achieved by avoiding a situation which leads to an over-expectation. Can we do something about the over-expectation? I think yes, we can. It’s is all in our hands as to how much we allow a situation to lead to an over-expectation and how we act, if it’s already a case.
